Taking a cue from a Mini 6.50 to make a little gem that can be used both as a daysailer and cruising boat, possibly with zero impact. This is the philosophy behind Sam Yacht’s TT700, designed and hand-built by the Macciocu brothers from Bolzano, Italy. We tested version 2.0 at the TAG Heuer VELAFestival in Santa Margherita: compared to the first model, some changes have been made, the most important of which is the lengthening of the double rudder blade. The electric motor, solar panels, and other “smart” solutions such as the tambour guillotine that becomes a cockpit table have been retained.
A BOAT IN THE NAME OF ECOLOGY
At 6.95 meters long and 2.80 meters wide (1.60 draft), with no drape (in fact, it is approved “no working deck,” so you should not leave the cockpit while sailing), the TT700 is trailerable (with tilting vessel) and below deck offers as many as four berths, with a kitchen and separate bathroom. The interior is faux leather, and the deck wood is European ash, sourced from controlled forests and treated naturally to withstand the marine environment.
OUR EVIDENCE
We leave the harbor: the double paddle allows easy maneuvering even with the tiller, and thanks to the electric motor, the boat is very quiet. We push the engine to full throttle (2 kW: theoretically at full throttle the range is 3.5 hours, while at one-third power, 0.7 kW, we can easily reach 10 hours, Andrea Macciocu assures me) and reach 4.3 knots. Outside, the wind is scarce: we hoist the mainsail (very easy, even solo, thanks to maneuvers within the helmsman’s reach and lazy-jacks) and unfurl the genoa in about 5 knots of southerly wind and calm seas. The 30-square-meter “canvas” has us touching 3.8 knots upwind (apparent angle 28°), while on the grand slack, with white sails, (we did not fit the 44-square-meter gennaker), we reach 2.5 knots with 4.8 knots of breeze. Not bad for this smart little ecoboat! www.sam-yacht.it
