The exploits of Alex Thomson (who recently walked in a suit and tie on the mast of his IMOCA 60 Hugo Boss leaning almost 90 degrees, and two years ago had made headlines for his “keel walk”) have made an uproar. It is not long before the first Thomsonian “followers” show up on the web.
TO WORK WE GO ELEGANT
Danes Jonas Warrer (gold in Beijing in 2008 in the 49er) and Peter Lang (bronze in London, also in the 49er) are the stars of this video titled “Another Day at the 49er Office,” where the two get ready, complete with suit and tie, to go to work. And for them, the job is called 49er (the film is used to sponsor their upcoming participation in Rio 2016).

OUR “PRECEDENT”
The story reminds us of when, in 2010, we had entrusted the testing of the new First 30 to our own Giorgio Murnik. He 30-year-old Italian, career jurist. She: French, was one of the most anticipated boats of the year. And Giorgio, hurriedly, in his office suit, had jumped from his desk to the helm of the Juan Koyoumdjian-designed bolide.
THE FIRST 30 IN BRIEF
The Argentine architect opted for a vertical bow, double rudders, a flat and wide stern, and a very pronounced edge on the hull. The sail plan includes a very set back mast, offset by an advanced bulb that allows for a very powerful genoa that veers with ease. The deck has easy maneuvering and, thanks to quartered spreaders, the mast is backstay-free. A choice that led to the creation of a large mainsail, the staysail of which is positioned at the extreme stern of the boat.
