Each month, in the pages of The Journal of Sailing, we interview sailors and mariners who have braved the world’s oceans. We all ask the same question: what are the places where you must sail at least once in your life? Among the answers, invariably, the Mediterranean Sea appears.
Yes, the Mare Nostrum has admirers everywhere, who love it first and foremost for its heterogeneity: from Turkey to the Balearic Islands, from the Italian coasts to those of North Africa, it is a melting pot of richly diverse cultures, of ever-fascinating environments. In this guide we have encapsulated thirteen itineraries that we consider among the best for those who want to experience a different kind of vacation.
To help you, we have combined beautiful photographs with texts written by those who have actually sailed these places to give you the feelings they experienced. Then there could be no shortage of practical information: such as restaurants, which can be reached safely from the sea, or safe roadsteads where you can drop anchor, sheltered from prevailing winds and also explaining what seabed you will find. If you prefer to stop in port, you have numbers to call and Vhf channel directions here. For a vacation to be a happy one and for there to be no nasty surprises, it is then essential to know the local weather: don’t worry, you can find that too in the pages of this special Vacation by Sea in Italy and the Mediterranean!
