Frenchman Yann Groleau (43), flying enthusiast and sailing layman, owner of the small company Hauwell Studios, created the Geovoile Race Management System (RMS) in 2005, after realizing, to his surprise, that no one had yet used Flash technology for au large race tracking.

In just a few years, the program has become a must-have, and there are now so many major ocean races that rely on Geovoile for tracking. These include the Volvo Ocean Race (the 2011-12 editions, as shown in the photo above, and 2014-15), the Route du Rhum, the Mini Transat, the Discovery Route for Banque Populaire VII, and many, many other international competitions. Take a trip to www.geovoile.com, and in the historian you can look up the tracking of all these events (from the Solitaire du Figaro to the Transquadra, from Les Sables-Azores to Yvan Bourgnon’s round-the-world race).

For this Volvo Ocean Race, although the cartography is updated to the public every 3 hours, thanks to a partnership with Inmarsat the organization receives updated data every 10 seconds: by cross-referencing the positions of the boats, a real-time ranking is compiled. Next on Geovoile’s calendar is the Barcelona World Race, starting next Dec. 31.
