One Route du Rhum, two parallel stories. Two stories of great sailors who were not exactly first-timers (indeed, in one case, really aged) who proved their worth and ended up being hailed at home, which we tell you.
PEYRON, HERO (ALMOST) BY ACCIDENT
The first is Loïck Peyron’s., who at the age of 55 won the classic transoceanic (3,542 miles solo from Saint Malo to Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe) on the maxi trimaran Banque Populaire, putting all the other great sailors in line and setting a new regatta record (and to think that he wasn’t even supposed to participate, but friend Armel Le Cleac’h’s injury launched him aboard the superboat as a substitute). His success earned him election as Marin de l’Année 2014, which in France is equivalent to our Sailor of the Year.
KNOX-JOHNSTON, THE SEMPREVERSE “SIR”
The other story features the legendary Robin Knox-Johnston: on the Open 60 Grey Power he finished third in the Rhum category. An outstanding achievement, Sir Robin is 75 years old (in 1969 he completed his Golden Globe solo nonstop circumnavigation of the world). Of course, the title of Britain’s Yachtsman of the Year, awarded by boats.com in collaboration with the Yacht Journalists Association, also came for him. A title awarded to him for the fourth time, the first being in 1969 itself. Old hen makes good stock. Will you, too, among the 100 nominees for TAG Heuer 2015 Sailor of the Year that we are presenting to you, vote for an old fox?
