Until January 31, 2014, the new Ice 62 will be on display at Marina di Cala Galera (Pier B1), Argentario: there is also the possibility of sea trials and visits on board (just make an appointment with the official Ice dealer, Wind Yachts, by calling 0564 810074 or 347 3602934). The boat, built by the Ice Yachts shipyard in Salvirola, Cremona, Italy, was designed by the Felci studio. Find our test in the December/January issue of SAIL.
We also find on this 18-meter water lines and performance appendages that promise tight angles and good upwind pace and glide in carrying gaits accompanied by a very high level of technology, present everywhere on board.
The shell and deck are laminated in a female mold using epoxy-cast hybrid glass and carbon fibers; the carbon structures are laminated in place under vacuum, becoming one with the hull and deck. These choices, in addition to keeping weights down, give the boat a solidity and sturdiness that can withstand the repeated stresses and heavy loads faced in even the most demanding sailings. A strong point of this new hull is definitely the versatility related to the possible keel configurations, that is, the choice between a movable keel, which allows the draft to be changed from almost 4 meters to 2.3 meters, and a fixed keel, which at the customer’s need can vary from 2.9 meters to about 3.4 meters.
BULB AND WHEELHOUSE
These options are also related to the optimization of the weight of the bulb, which is specially sized and numerically controlled. There is also the option of adopting a double-bladed wheelhouse, a configuration typical of ocean racing boats. Both wheelhouses, double-bladed or traditional, allow for optimized control even when the boat is heeled or subjected to large aerodynamic loads, confirming the great attention turned to the issue of safety, central to both design and construction.
The spacious and comfortable interiors, provided in various precious woods of the owner’s choice, are elegant and functional. Maximum attention is paid to details in both design and construction, always designed to combine functionality and aesthetics. Thanks to the technologies employed, such as the use of lightened panels, significant weight savings are achieved compared to a traditional fabrication, yet without sacrificing the quality of joinery workmanship. The owner is given the opportunity to choose the available layouts according to his or her needs; three bathrooms, a large dinette with a major galley and a spacious pantry, the generous cabins that can be either three or four, as desired, as well as the sailor’s room in the bow. And for racing enthusiasts, we remind you that the lines of the Ice 62 are derived from those of the Felci 61, a hull capable of winning major offshore races such as the ARC, the Giraglia, Antigua Sailing Week, the 500x 2 and many others.
