Spring and summer: take the boat and set sail! But first have a look at the market and see if there is anything you can use, so you can leave even more relaxed and comfortable! We have selected for you five “smart” products that will simplify your navigation and life on board.
THE SAILORS’ SMARTWATCH
A smartwatch dedicated to sailors, capable of easily providing real-time boat data and evaluating sail adjustments in relation to pre-set targets and polars. It is called esaWATCH and is the latest technology developed by ASTRA Yacht for the sailing market. Its use puts enthusiasts, novices or experienced racers in a position to independently perform the procedure to visualize boat speed and course, with indications of variations for the best tacking. Waterproof and with a 1.54-inch display, it allows multiple page views and can connect via Wi-Fi to on-board instrumentation, allowing constant monitoring of performance trends and any other useful information during a regatta. esaWatch also includes among its functions all those of a smartphone, giving access to phone calls, emails, messages, and the Internet.
This device is an addition to ASTRA Yacht’s esa (easy sailing assistance) range., used by a number of professional teams, which has adopted esa Regatta, an application for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch that can automatically process the actual target of the boat’s performance, allowing it to be saved on a pc. esa Regatta also acts as a multiple repeater of on-board instrumentation, provides a historical wind chart, records navigation and departure data that can then be processed. www.astrayacht.com
THE ECO MOSQUITO NET
In summer, especially if you keep your boat or go cruising in hot and humid places, mosquitoes on board can be a problem. Even when cooking below deck, it is not difficult to attract flies, wasps and even hungry hornets. Waterline Design recently unveiled a range of mosquito nets for the sailboat, featuring an “eco-friendly” frame (and not lead, like most of these products) and black polyester netting. It assembles in 15 seconds and is available in various sizes depending on your use (deckhouse, hatches). The price starts at about 80 euros + VAT per network. www.waterlinedesign.se
THE DWARF MOB
Compactness is Ocean Signal’s trademark: after launching the world’s smallest PLB, the rescueMe PLB1, from the company also comes the smallest MOB AIS device (with integrated DSC) on the market. The MOB1 rescueME is designed to be easily attached to even the smallest size life jackets (it finds its ideal mounting on the life jacket’s oral inflation tube thanks to the provided clip), ready for automatic activation in case of falls overboard. Once the device is active, the AIS (Automatic Identification System) will report its accurate position directly to the boat’s chartplotter, with a red circle accompanied by latitude, longitude and distance to the man overboard. In addition, the Digital Selective Calling (DSC) alarm will also be activated. 134 mm long, 38 mm wide and 27 deep, the RescueME MOB1 weighs only 90 grams. The price? Approximately 265 euros + VAT. www.oceansignal.com
THE SELF-TACKING JIB IN RETROFIT
A self-tacking jib system makes life on board much easier, especially if you often find yourself sailing with a small crew. The jib sheet passes into a block placed on a rail that runs downwind during the tack, saving those on board from having to deal with caulking the leeward sheet and dropping the upwind one. Seldén has devised a universal retrofit-installable system characterized by a curved rail (supplied with standard curvatures but also “custom” on request), a carriage that slides on Torlon balls, and two articulated supports for easy deck mounting. www.seldenmast.com
THE PORTABLE INDUCTION STOVE
Induction stoves, in boats, greatly simplify the cook’s work and reduce the risk of fire. This particular model, the NuWave-Pro 1800 Watt Induction Cooker, is lightweight (less than 5 kg), portable and already has many cooking temperatures preset that are ideal for the meal you intend to cook (but you can change them to your liking). The cooktop is made of ceramic glass. Price: about 103 euros. www.healthcraft.com
