In 5 days the voting for the 2014 TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year will close: to date more than 4,000 of you have voted. If you have not already done so, please support the sailor who has most excited you among our nominees. It could be because of your vote that one of the 12 “nominations” manages to end up in the “top five” within which the jury of merit will select the new Sailor of the Year. The coveted award, in addition to the Passion, Innovation and Performance awards, will be presented at the TAG Heuer VELAFestival in Genoa (April 10-13) at the close of “Champions Day,” scheduled for Friday, April 11.
THE POINT OF THE SITUATION
At the top of the ranking determined by your votes, we find a Sardinian “triumvirate”: leading the way is the young Cagliari-born Marta Maggetti, RS:X specialist, tailed by the two oceanic sailors Andrea and Gaetano Mura. Slightly further back, the Italians behind Team Oracle USA’s success at the last America’s Cup: Gilberto “Gillo” Nobili, a grinder who was also instrumental in the creation of Oracle’s wireless navigation software, and the award-winning firm of Mario Caponnetto & Michele Stroligo, whose contribution was crucial on the design team. They are followed, a little behind, by Silvia Sicouri and Giancarlo Pedote.
Once again this year you will decide who will be the greatest Italian sailor! To vote, simply log on to our website and click on the “Sailor of the Year” box. Here you will find profiles of the twelve candidates and can vote for your favorite by March 15. I your votes will determine a real “Top 5.” It will be among these five candidates that a quality jury, composed of top journalists and sailing professionals, will decide (also taking into consideration the number of votes you cast) the winner of the TAG Sailor of the YearHeuer 2014.
THE STORY OF THE SAILOR OF THE YEAR
It has been since 1991 that Il Giornale della Vela has organized the most prestigious award given to an Italian sailor. Over the years it has been won by the likes of Paul Cayard, Alessandra Sensini, Giovanni Soldini, Francesco De Angelis, Vasco Vascotto and Vincenzo Onorato. The winners also include prominent names of ocean sailors such as Matteo Miceli, Alessandro Di Benedetto and Marco Nannini. In the last edition to win the TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year was Max Sirena, the Luna Rossa skipper who battled in the waters of San Francisco in the last America’s Cup. You will decide who succeeds him this year.
