On Sunday, October 12, the ninth Central Italy Sunfish Class Sailing Championship began in the waters of Orbetello Lagoon. The perfect weather conditions, characterized by a sirocco wind of 10 to 15 knots, allowed the race committee, coordinated by Enzo Danesi, president of the Società Canottieri Orbetello, and Carlo Giordano, to map out a perfect race course, on which three very heated races were held, with minimal detachments and dueling tacking just a few meters from the coast and spectators.
The next date will be Nov. 2, and the championship will run until Dec. 21. At the end, prizes will be awarded to the first three athletes in the overall standings, the first grandmaster, the first junior and the first in the women’s standings. A special prize will be awarded to the sailor who has shown the most fairness on the water and the greatest sportsmanship.
The championship, since its inception, has seen a continuous growth in the number of entrants, so much so that, this year, there will be thirty boats-from various circles in Tuscany and Lazio-that will compete for the titles. As Sunfish Class President Stefano Ferro told us, the factors that contributed to the success of the event are many, among them are certainly, the hospitality and organizational skills of the Rowing Society, the competence of the race judges, the existence of a website (www.classesunfish.it) that is always up-to-date, which punctually illustrates all the activities carried out by the association, the opportunity to try on site the hulls made available by the class. The added value, however, is the race course: the lagoon, besides being a beautiful nature reserve, is also an ideal place for sailing in the winter months.
