In his book “Lines,” Olin James Stephens called it “one of my best designs” because it combines beauty, speed and seamanship. Indeed Marea, a splendid 18.56-meter cutter built in 1977 by the Carlini shipyards in Rimini, is the flagship in the career of Sparkman & Stephens. A jewel that you can admire on the dock at the TAG Heuer VELAFestival.
We are not talking about a “lounge” boat but a real “grinder.” Marea, with Italian crew, participated in the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) in November 2012, finishing 12th in its category. With 25 knots, on the slack, the boat reached a peak speed of 16.4 knots: To make the 2,680-mile crossing from Las Palmas (Canary Islands) to Rodney Bay (Saint Lucia), Marea took 15 days, 14 hours and 21 minutes, at an average speed of 7.2 knots.
