soldini-maseratiGiovanni Soldini is trying again, and if the predicted weather window occurs Maserati will sail from New York between Sunday, July 6 and Monday, July 7 to Cape Lizard (UK). Italy’s most famous sailor, aboard the modified VOR 70, had already attempted in May 2012 to break the record over 2,925 miles in the North Atlantic: a record held by the 140-foot maxi Mari-Cha IV (owner Robert Miller), which in 2003 traveled the route taking 6 days, 17 hours, 52 minutes and 39 seconds, at an average speed of 18.5 knots. Maserati had sailed perfectly over the first three days, and after 1,000 miles had a virtual lead over Mari-Cha of nearly 200 miles, but then Soldini and co. had entered a high-pressure bubble that had blown the feat.

forecastICEBERG RISK DECREASES

Giovanni and his crew have been on stand-by since early June and have been closely following the evolving weather situation. “Between Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th over the departure area a very good southwesterly flow is expected that would quickly push us toward Newfoundland,” Soldini explains. “At the moment, however, little pressure is expected in the Atlantic with a very aft angle. Needless to say, we are looking forward to our departure, partly because icebergs in Newfoundland have greatly diminished this past month.”

THE BOAT TO BEAT

A modern-designed schooner launched in 2003, the Mari-Cha IV is an original creation of the JMV Industries shipyards in Cherbourg, northern France. The 140-foot-long (about 42 meters) hull is constructed of carbon fiber and has twin masts 45 meters high. Fast, very fast, it can reach peaks of 40 knots. During the New York-Cape Lizard, in addition to the mileage record, he also set the 24-hour speed record, covering an impressive 525.7 miles.
