Sergio Gaibisso, the historic president of FIV for nearly two decades (from ’89 to 2008, the year Carlo Croce was elected), has left at the age of 84. Two of his great passions, sailing and politics: in addition to leading the Federvela (he was a long time head of the Circolo Nautico “Al Mare” of Alassio, of which he was still honorary president), he had served as mayor of Alassio, the town where he was born in 1929. Here is the recollection of the Italian Sailing Federation:
“Dear sailing friends,
with a strong grip on our hearts and much, much sadness, we are compelled to bring you news of a serious bereavement that has affected all of us. In the middle of the day today, our beloved Sergio Gaibisso, who was president of the IVF for almost two decades (1989 to 2008), left for his final journey.
A piece of sailing history leaves us, then. And with him goes a true lover of sailing, a sport that was Sergio’s very life, a benchmark for entire generations of sailors.
The entire FIV joins his family’s grief over this very serious loss, which we sincerely still struggle to accept. And it is a pain that hurts, especially for those who worked alongside Sergio all these years.
The day and place of the funeral has not yet been decided, which we will have a way to communicate as soon as possible.
Rest in peace, dear friend Sergio.”
