The countdown begins: there are 10 days left until the close of voting for the 2014 TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year, and the 3,000-vote threshold has been well exceeded. There is still time to turn the tables, and it could be precisely because of your vote that one of the candidates manages to finish in the “top five” within which the jury of merit will select the new Sailor of the Year. The coveted award, in addition to the Passion, Innovation and Performance awards, will be presented at the TAG Heuer VELAFestival in Genoa (April 10-13) at the close of “Champions Day,” scheduled for Friday, April 11.
HOW IS IT GOING
Leading the games is Marta Maggetti, the RS:X specialist who has been considered the possible heir to Alessandra Sensini after her recent results in the international arena. Behind him, the situation is as uncertain as ever: lots of votes for Team Oracle’s pair of Italian designers, Mario Caponnetto and Michele Stroligo, and for grinder Gilberto Nobili: it’s not everyone who takes home two America’s Cups. Next up was Gaetano Mura, the friendly Sardinian navigator, just ahead of his namesake Andrea Mura, the 2013 Ostar winner. Silvia Sicouri, Italy’s Nacra 17 hopeful for Rio 2016 along with Vittorio Bissaro, is also in the running.

The winners also include prominent names of ocean sailors such as Matteo Miceli, Alessandro Di Benedetto and Marco Nannini. In the last edition to win the TAG Heuer Sailor of the Year was Max Sirena, the Luna Rossa skipper who battled in the waters of San Francisco in the last America’s Cup.
