sailing-conductorsBen Bart (28) and Smutje Hannes Hafenklang (26) are two quirky German “musicomarineers” who have embarked on a very special adventure: they restored an old 1976 9.90-meter sloop (designed by Australian William Garden), the Marianne (pictured below), aboard which they sailed from Sydney to Berlin.

sailing-conductorsTWO YEARS OF SAILING…
A 2-year-long crossing: after setting sail from the coast of Australia heading west, the two have sailed through Indian, Pacific and Atlantic and are currently in the east coast of the US
. Why are they taking so long? The two “Sailing Conductors” (this is the name of the project) stopped at hundreds of different locations on the continents they crossed: at each stop, they contacted a local musician and had him or her record a track with their instrument.

…IN THE NAME OF WORLD MUSIC
At the next stopover, they would engage another musician by having him record his instrument over the previously acquired track. And so on, until we create songs born from the collaboration of different artists, in different places, with different sounds. A kind of search for the universal language of man through music. And through sailing: because as they tell on their website www.sailingconductors.com, this is real sailing, no frills.
