The Internet, over the past month, has been flooded with videos of celebrities and non-celebrities (even Homer Simpson…) dumping buckets of ice water on each other. The Ice Bucket Challenge, that is the name of the challenge, is an initiative created to raise awareness and funds for ALS research , Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis : also known as “Lou Gehrig’s disease,”” Charcot’s disease,” or “motor neuron disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons, which are the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that enable movements of voluntary muscles. The mechanism of the Ice Bucket Challenge stipulates that those who accept the challenge need only pay $10, while those who decline it (as U.S. President Barack Obama did, for example) must dorn $100. In another version, pouring the bowl of water on oneself replaced the donation.
All good, all fun, but also a lot of controversy due to the fact that fundraising, especially in Italy, did not go hand in hand with the “viral” spread of the videos. The sailing world is also beginning to participate. Kicking things off was Knut Frostad, CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race, the round-the-world crewed race that will start next Oct. 4 in Alicante, Spain, who in turn challenged some holy monsters like Ian Walker. But videos, as mentioned, are useless without then substantive input. That’s why below are links to the main Italian associations you can donate to.
