porzioThe urge to explore, to discover what we do not know, has been inherent in man since the dawn of time. What changes are the places: once it was the Pillars of Hercules that marked the boundary between the known world and mystery, then the search for the Indies and even the discovery of a new continent. Since the beginning of the last century, daring navigators have desperately tried to find the Northwest Passage, to go from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean north of the American continent. A challenge that has had its “boom” in recent decades with the gradual retreat of the ice and that now sees dozens of boats participating each year. End of the adventure? Not by a long shot. There are places we have barely heard of, such as theSvalbard Archipelago, where our own John Porzio accompanies us in the next few pages (also the author of the photographs you admire). Up there in the far north of Europe, a handful of semi-inhabited islands where it is mandatory to sail with a weapon on board and in which the arrival of an Italian boat was greeted by the few researchers present as a true event.
