How to adjust the ‘tree once we have verified the good condition of each rigging component? We put this question to Roberto Spata, who confirmed the importance of careful regulation even for those who only go boating for fun. Proper synergy between the lateral and longitudinal (pre-bending) adjustment of the mast allows for a mainsail with a profile that conforms to different wind strengths. A properly shaped mainsail makes it easy to steer the boat because the hull will respond best to the stimuli from the rudder. Adjustment begins on the ground by finding the lateral centrality of the shaft and arranging the foot properly. Then we go out to sea to check the shape of the mast when the sails are under pressure, acting on the shrouds, flywheels and backstay to make any corrections.
THE ADJUSTMENT EXPERT.
Roberto Spata, 53, like almost all racers began competing on dinghies, winning the Italian title in the Laser Class. He approached offshore sailing by racing on all kinds of boats and winning, to date, 17 Italian Championships, 6 European Championships and 5 World Championships. In 2003 he founded New Wind, a technical consulting and service company aimed at both shipowners and major Italian shipyards, collaborating with the latter to build some of the most important boats.
