Why get on board with us for the March issue of the Sailing Journal? For many good reasons. Read on, we are already revealing ten of them for you to preview: starting with the 100 boats that (in our opinion), have made history, through the memory of Ambrogio Fogar, exactly 40 years after his circumnavigation of the globe against the wind, sketched by his daughter. Plus beautiful stories of passion, unusual routes, technical advice and much, much more.
1. THE 100 MYTHIC BOATS FROM 3 TO 109 METERS.
Why does a boat make us fall in love? It’s not just the lines or the design of the deckhouse, it’s not the victories or its speed. It’s all a matter of the heart. We have chosen 100 boats of all types and sizes (from 3 to 109 meters) that have made sailing history and still excite us. From the small and revolutionary Moth to the legendary Sea Cloud of 1931, first serving the U.S. Navy and then the presidential yacht of the Dominican Republic.
2. AMBROGIO FOGAR, ADVENTURE IS ADVENTURE.
He was the first Italian, forty years ago, to circumnavigate the globe against the wind by introducing Italians to the ocean. He crossed the Atlantic with a broken rudder and reached the North Pole on foot. Loved and then hated, he lived many lives in one. Drawing an unprecedented portrait of him in this extensive report is a person who knew him well, as only a daughter can…
3. ARE YOU SURE YOUR TREE IS OKAY?
Have you checked the condition of your rigging and its trim? Proper mast adjustment is not a “racer’s affair,” but is also of paramount importance in making sailing safe. Together with two experts, Walter Giovannelli and Roberto Spata, we reveal all the tricks for maintaining and adjusting your tree.
4. AMBROSE BECCARIA, HANDS OF GOLD AND WILL OF IRON
Ambrogio Beccaria from Milan has a dream, to participate in the 2017 Mini Transat: that’s why he went to recover a wrecked Pogo 2 in Portugal and restored it to its original splendor after hundreds of hours of work locked in a shed in La Spezia. We had him tell us how he did it: at the age of 23, he decided to change his life, devoting himself to sailing.
5. WORK, COMMITMENT, IMAGINATION (SO I BEAT THE WORLD CHAMPION)
Carlo Alberini is a practical demonstration of how, from local regattas in the Adriatic, one can go on to fulfill the dream of winning Quantum Key West Race Week, wetting the noses of Americans at home. How do you become a champion in a high-level monotype like the J/70? With humility and a willingness to learn, building a stable and trustworthy team, forging lasting partnerships such as the one with the Calvi Group, which has lasted 15 years.
6. NAVIGATING THROUGH HISTORY
The long journey of the great journalist and reporter John Porzio between Sicily and Africa. Discovering our origins, places of incomparable beauty and ugliness to be avoided. In this first part Porzio reveals all the secrets of the Trapani to Licata section.
7. BOATS OF THE MONTH
We tested for you the new Impression 40, an ideal boat for those who have recently launched into the world of sailing, safe, easy and comfortable for family sailing. 8. EXTRA BIG: THE BIGGEST IN THE WORLD
They can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Yet they stand out because each of them has a story to tell. Here are the top five wind queens. Each of them is distinguished by the story it brings: either by the many vicissitudes that have characterized its operational life worthy of an adventure novel, or by the refined technological content it manages to express.
9. 20,000 VOTES, FIVE GOOD STORIES
We wrote “twenty thousand” in the title because we closed the number before the end of the first round of elections. The first phase of the Sailor of the Year web poll (with the “magnificent 100” candidates) was a great success, with 25 thousand final votes. In this article we tell you five stories chosen from those of the top-rated candidates.
