Genoa, April 12 and 13, sees the birth of the VELAFestival TAG Heuer CUP, the competitive sailing event open to all, running on a course steeped in history. Becoming protagonists of Italy’s only major sailing festival.
Sail as the sailors of old did, when they challenged each other along the coasts of the world. Technology did not exist, and the best was always the one who could understand and make the best use of the wind. As was the case back in 1851, when the schooner America defeated the British by circumnavigating the Isle of Wight and naming the Hundred Guineas Cup, which later became the world’s most famous sailing trophy. The very replica of that incredible schooner will be there, along the VELAFestival docks, watching all the participants in the first edition of the TAG Heuer CUP, the competitive sailing race, the new major event of Italy’s only sailing festival, which will take place on April 12 and 13, 2014. On Saturday 12, crews will depart from the docks of the TAG Heuer VELAFestival, where they will be able to moor for free, to
Compete on a 12-mile course from Boccadasse to Sori and back.
, along one of the most fascinating and historic stretches of the Ligurian coastline. This is where, in the second half of the 1800s, leudi and cargo boats competed in speed before officially entering service on their assigned routes. And they sailed white sails, meaning only with mainsail and genoa, no gennaker or spi. It is to revive this tradition, that participants in the VELAFestival TAG Heuer CUP will also not use “balloon sails,” but will have to take advantage of every gust to prove they are the best. And, why not, maybe tangon the genoa…. There is no limit on type or size for vessels: starting from small dinghies upwards, according to this class division: up to 7.50m from 7.51 to 9.50 from 9.51 to 11m from 11.01 to 13m from 13.01 to 15m over 15m
All participating boats will receive a kit which will contain competitive sailing instructions, free admissions to the TAG Heuer VELAFestival for each crew member (via wristband), a copy of the April Sailing Newspaper with a guide to the TAG Heuer VELAFestival, a DVD with a great sailing-themed movie, the manual “The Best 350 Bays of Italy,” a pair of protective gloves for trappe and mooring lines, TAG Heuer CUP class flag to be placed at the stern, TAG Heuer sticker to be placed at the bow, TAG Heuer cap, TAG Heuer goggle strap, and TAG Heuer VELAFestival flag.
THE PROTAGONIST IS YOU The TAG Heuer CUP also continues on land! All registered boats will be able to moor free of charge in the spaces provided by the VELAFestival organization in the dock of the Genoa fairgrounds and participate on Saturday from 6:30 p.m. in the grand awards ceremony. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in all six classes. In addition, an important special award will be given: “Gentleman Yachting” intended for the boat that will be distinguished by elegance and style of the crew and yacht, regardless of the size and age of the boat. Following this, VELAFestival Night, a big party with live music at the water’s edge, will start.
And on Sunday, sailing participants will be able to visit the TAG Heuer VELAFestival for free and participate in the big event dedicated to Agostino Straulino, the greatest Italian sailor of all time.
