The idea comes from Gian Bartolo Barnao, FIV Level III Instructor (and member of the technical staff of the Olympic and junior teams from 2002 to 2006): it is a reduced sail for Optimist.
In sustained winds, it could be a great solution in sailing schools to let the little ones sail calmly without them getting scared.
UNDERGOING TESTING
The normal sail area of the world’s most popular “bathtubs” is 3.25 square meters; Gimba (as he is known in sailing circles) is testing one that is about 2.50 meters, sharply cut at an angle on the leech side. “I would actually like to try to straighten the leech,” he explains, “but to do that I need to make some changes such as adding battens and shortening the base and consequently the boom. We’ll see.”
THE ANTICIPATION OF FEEDBACK
Now Gimba is looking around and if the feedback is positive, he will launch into production: there have already been others who have attempted to reduce the canvas to the Optimist, but the results (both in the case of a possibility of reefing the mainsail, and of triangular-shaped sails without a peak) have not been exciting.
