This month we got excited about the exploits of Riccardo Andrea Leccese. An Italian kitesurfing ace, or rather Italian-Colombian (born in the beautiful Colombian island of San Andrés where his mother is from, while his father is from Molise), class of 1982, first climbed the kite in 2003.
An absolute ruler of the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Melbourne last December, this guy is among our nominees for TAG Heuer 2015 Sailor of the Year. Riccardo is a true all-rounder, who in Australia was able to win ten out of ten regattas and win gold ahead of Germany’s Gruber and Russia’s Doronin (this is only the latest major achievement, but Riccardo has been at the top of the world for years now).
We want to give them credit and, as we have done in the past, help kiting be recognized as a sport that is part of what we consider sailing. For us it is, and has been for some time. A kiter is a sailor because like a sailor he loves the wind, the sea and the challenge with these two elements. In fact, how many sailing enthusiasts are trying their hand at the sport? More and more. We were disappointed when, for reasons that were never clear to us, kitesurfing did not join the classes for the 2016 Rio Olympics, but already it is thought that he will be among the protagonists of those in Tokyo in 2020: if so, we already have a phenomenon ready to win the medal.
