Whitefin is a 92-foot Spirit of Tradition category, born in 1983 in Maine to a design by Bruce King. A boat that its owner first encountered in May 2014 in Varazze where, neglected, it had been lying for a couple of years. “As soon as I saw her I knew immediately that she was exactly what I was looking for, to quote the words of Sciarelli, my great mentor: ‘a boat with a soul.’ I had already seen several above 24 meters, but none had caught my eye. So began a long negotiation with the Unicredit bank (owner of the boat after the death of the previous owner Alfredo Canessa) that ended earlier this year.” Thus began restoration work at the new Marina di Pisa to restore Whitefin, which had already undergone restoration in 2002, to its former glory.
WHITEFIN LIVES AGAIN AND YOU WILL FIND IT AT THE VELAFESTIVAL
“Right now I have 12 people working on board, four carpenters fixing the deck, two electricians, an electronics man, two plumbers, three sailors, and my 20-year-old son William, who shares this passion with me and will be on board when he doesn’t have university commitments.” It will be a refit in record time; in fact, the boat will be ready by early May to participate first in the MYBA Show and then travel to Santa Margherita for the TAG Heuer VelaFestival where you can admire it up close at the dock. The season will then continue with stages of the Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge and the charter season in Greece before returning to Italy for the Barcolana Classic. Whitefin is 27.43 m long, 6.28 m wide and fishes 3.10 m. It has a 200 sq. m. mainsail, a 140% genoa of 250 sq. m. and a 500 sq. m. gennaker. The rigging also includes yankee and foresail.
