A very nasty surprise for Yvan Bourgnon upon returning from his incredible round-the-world voyage aboard an uninhabitable catamaran (we tell you about here): his brother Laurent, a two-time winner of the Route du Rhum (1994 and 1998) and the Transat Jacques Vabre in 1995, and, right along with his brother, in 1997, disappeared while diving in the Toau Atoll lagoon in Tuamotu, in Polynesia. A lagoon famous for its sudden and rushing currents.

YVAN DOESN’T FIT
Laurent Bourgnon, the Franco-Swiss (Twostar, Quebec-Saint Malo, and Solitaire du Figaro victories are also in his palmares) who in 2008 amazed everyone by setting off on a round-the-world trip with his family on a motor catamaran, the Jambo, did not rise again after a plunge last June 24, just one day after Yvan’s applause arrival in Ouistreham.
After 5 days, Polynesian authorities decided to call off the search for the 49-year-old (a plane, helicopter, and several boats had been mobilized), but brother Yvan is not giving up and has announced that he will continue the search with Jambo. But the chances of finding Laurent are really slim. The sea recalled another great sailor. Adieu.
