A report from one of our readers regarding the poor treatment received at the Neptune Marina in Messina, which we decided to publish, triggered a veritable flood of comments on the web, with users having lively and constructive discussions citing personal examples and experiences. A few days after the publication of the testimony of Mr. Angelo Careccia (who was “kicked out” of the marina after specifying that he wanted to stay only a few hours) arrived on time at the newsroom The response of the Neptune Marina in the person of its director Ivo Blandina, which began by specifying how temporary parking in the Marina had been free of charge. He then went on to invite Angelo to give precise indications of the date and time of the entry to the Marina and the communication made to the Port Authority, and us to check whether since ’98, the year the Sicilian Marina became operational, we had received any negative reports in the newsroom (which we are not aware of). Immediate retort from Mr. Careccia: the debate is far from over.
CARECCIA’S RESPONSE TO THE MARINA
“Dear Mr. Ivo Blandina,
I am responding to you impulsively so as not to miss the moment: the precise day is July 16, 2013 at 10:30/11:00 a.m. (going back with my accountant to the date of the invoice for the full tank of diesel fuel, 283.21 euros, performed at the gas station leased about a mile to starboard looking at your Marina).
It was about 11 o’clock in the morning and there were your two co-workers, excuse me but I find it difficult to call them sailors, to whom I addressed my request to lean only for one or at most 2 hours, time to go buy a “cassata” from the Traina bakery (perhaps the name is not correct) and basic necessities such as water, beer and whatever might be needed for a string on the fly. At first there was all the space I wanted, but when I said I only needed it for a few hours, as if by magic, the space was no longer available. And it was not even possible for me to lean on the outside of the pier without even entering the Marina.”
FOR THE 60-FOOTER THE PLACE IS THERE
“Immediately after that,” Careccia continued, “came a large British catamaran (if memory serves, I’ll ask the crew), a 60-footerfor which his dinghy crew bargained not a little to get it moored (Careccia has a Bavaria 42, ed.). But what I find most disturbing is the fact that the harbormaster reprimanded me for entering the harbor without permission, and that if I needed to moor the solution was only one-your Marina.”
100 EUROS FOR A NIGHT AT THE DOCK
“Back, I was about to give in and ask for mooring for the night and before starting the due maneuvers his staff elegantly warned me that for my boat the rate was 100.00€ for 24h plus electricity and water consumption. I travel the world with charter boats and now I am about to do so with one of my own, but this unspeakable behavior I have never experienced. Now I certainly do not want to rage further but I hope that the blessings that will be forwarded to me may serve to have a different attitude toward anyone who goes to sea. In this regard, I would like to tell you that instead, still on my tour, in the marina of Rodi Garganico, the sailor Angelo, hosted us “for free “for a night and we did not know how to reciprocate, we consumed at the marina bar, galley from the supermarket, gasoline, restaurant, gadgets, gifts, and in the end positive publicity of a beautiful, new and little used marina.
For the too good, Happy Winds.”
