Did we announce that the Laser class issue would sink in the courts? This is probably what will happen after the decision made today , February 20, by the IVF during the Federal Council meeting.
Excommunicated Assolaser (the old association) as a Class Association and recognized instead the new Associazione Italia Classi Laser A.S.D. The IVF has thus openly declared war on the old Assolaser association, which, let us recall, is the one officially recognized by ILCA, the International Class Association under ISAF.
Italian laserists with the newly formed association’s membership can participate in national and zonal regattas, but are currently excluded from all international regattas organized by the ILCA: Eurocup, European and world championships, events required for Italian laserists to participate in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
It becomes decisive. not to risk an untenable situation, the uncomfortable position of FIV President Carlo Croce, that is, the one who officially “excommunicated” the old Assolaser. Carlo Croce, in fact, holds a second position in addition to that of President of the Italian Sailing Federation: he is leading the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), or the world governing body of Olympic sailing, for the four-year period 2013-2016. That same ISAF to which ILCA belongs, which recognizes Macrì’s Assolaser as the only Italian Laser class.
That’s a tough nut to crack for President Croce, who we are sure will be able to arrive at a logical compromise that will ward off the threat of the Tribunal. A legal war would do no one any good. The Italian Laser does not deserve a land-based battle that hurts those who just want to go to sea instead.
THE PRESS RELEASE FROM THE ITALIAN SAILING FEDERATION
We reproduce below the press release of the FIV:
“The Federal Council, at its February 20 meeting, according to the agenda, addressed the Laser issue. The President retraced the stages of the affair that led the Italian Sailing Federation to the revocation of Assolaser’s recognition as a recognized Class Association in Italy as a result of the failure to align its Bylaws with the legal norms, already provided for by the Melandri Reform and CONI’s Informative Principles, and a different application of the ranking list classification systems and allocation of places available for Italy in international competitions than the Italian Sailing Federation had intended.
Assolaser, invited to comply with the requirements and submit a new application for recognition, failed to do so, in fact warning the Federation from making any decision on the matter. At the same time, a new association representing Laser class boat owners has proceeded to file for recognition as a Class Association. The Board, having examined all documentation on file, voted by secret ballot and unanimously to recognize the Associazione Italia Classi Laser A.S.D. with headquarters in Livorno, Italy, Viale Italia no. 133, and represented by President Stefano Carnevali and National Secretary Giovanni Galli(www.italialaser.org).
Successful recognition implies for FIV members practicing sports in the Laser class, to join the association Italia Classi Laser A.S.D. as it is provided by the National Sports Activity Regulations – Part I. Membership will be required by the Italian Sailing Federation from March 1, 2015 for all events on the FIV calendar.
