As the kitesurfing fad broke out, the first records were set. Richard Branson, 61, Virgin tycoon, is the oldest kitesurfer to have crossed the English Channel Strait aboard the now famous “kite board.” It took him 3 hours and 45 minutes to complete the approximately 26 miles between Dymchurch (in the English county of Kent) and Wimereux (north of France).

AN EMBLAZONED RECORDMAN
In addition to being the oldest, he is certainly the richest to have tried his hand at the feat, since Branson is CeO of Virgin Group and is known in the news as a classic specimen of the “eccentric billionaire” (along with Swede Per Lindstrand, he was the first, in 1987, to cross the Atlantic in a hot air balloon. A few years later, in 1991 and again in a hot air balloon, he flew from Japan to Canada).
BEATEN BY HIS SON!
However, he was not the fastest, losing the family challenge: his son Sam set a record of 2 1/2 hours, while his father had to postpone the start by a day due to the kite being undersized for the weather conditions.
Richard Branson’s feat sheds a new light on kitesurfing; while spry and particularly fit, the Virgin tycoon is 61 years old: he did it, anyone can do it, with a little training. So why don’t you also experience the thrill of gliding over the water at absurd speeds pulled by the wing? A complete kitesurfer takes up little space and can be comfortably taken on a cruise on your boat: which can easily become a support boat. The Italian coasts are now chock full of kite schools where you can take a quick course and start moving offshore! Give your typical cruise a makeover!
