Luna Rossa’s controversial farewell to the America’s Cup still has not been digested, that organizers have announced the entry of a new Japanese team, SoftBank team Japan. Also confirming the decision was Kazuhiko Sofuku, “Fuku,” a Cup veteran with Nippon Challenge in 1999-2000 and now the team’s general manager. “Leading a Japanese challenge to the America’s Cup is a dream come true” said Fuku. “It’s a great opportunity for Japan and Japanese sailors to get back into the game for the America’s Cup.”
SoftBank team Japan will race under the flag of the Kansai Yacht Club, among the country’s most distinguished clubs.“It is an honor for Kansai Yacht Club to participate in the America’s Cup for the first time,” announced Commodore Ko Watanabe. “This is a great challenge, not only for our club, but for the whole country. With the support of the whole nation, I am sure we will represent Japan proudly“.
A basic level of technical assistance will be provided by Oracle Team USA to SoftBank Team Japan to prepare for the 2015 America’s Cup World Series. “SoftBank team Japan is a very positive entry for America’s Cup” said Trade Commissioner Harvey Schiller. “The Japanese challenge increases interest in the America’s Cup throughout Asia which is good news for all our teams and partners“.
