J/70 World Championship, it’s on. Seven Italian teams at the start

After two days of tonnage checks, the J/70 World Championship starts today in La Rochelle, France. More than 80 crews are at the start, with 16 nations represented. The man to beat is defending world champion Team Healy on Helly Hansen, but eyes are also on the Heather Gregg-Joe Bardenheier duo on Muse who hold the title in the Corinthian division.
THE SEVEN ITALIAN TEAMS
Italy responds with European champion Carlo Alberini on Calvi Network, who earlier this year, with his Key West Race victory, has already shown he can hold his own against overseas teams. They also promise to give the eve’s favorites a run for their money. Franco Solerio and Notaro Team’s elagain by Luca Domenici, protagonists of the crowded and international Alcatel Onetouch 2015 circuit, which together with Jedi 70 by Matteo Difino, Andrea Zaoli on ITA765, Vittorio di Mauro on ITA105 and Ferdinando Battistella on Diva bring to seven the number of blue crews engaged in the rainbow tussle.
HIGHEST LEVEL
Battling it out from today through Saturday, in a tight schedule of four trials a day, are top teams from around the world: from Olympic medalist Hugo Rocha for Spain to the Australians of multi-titled Steve McConaghy, via Brazil’s Mauricio Santa Cruz, four times on top of the world in the J/24 and among the strongest in the international scene on the small home J/Boats. The rainbow program includes ten trials, the first discard will make entry at the completion of the fifth.
