THE FIGHT WITH THE DEFENDING CHAMPIONS
Completed the entire racing program with a suffered epilogue on the last race due to the almost total absence of wind, with several boats finishing out of maximum time. At the end of the nine races, San Remo’s Franco Solerio on L’elagain, with Daniele Cassinari as tactician, spit it out for three points over his direct opponent in this three-day Garda event, defending tricolor champion Carlo Alberini on Calvi Network, as always flanked by Branko Brcin to call tacking and gybing. Third is Maltese Sebastian Ripard on Team Beatsafe, a newcomer to the circuit who from the first day has been undermining the place of honor and giving the Italians a hard time. At the foot of the podium, in order, Alessio Marinelli’s Uji Uji, winner of today’s last round, and Pietro Saccomanni’s Spin One.
With the Eurocup victory and after holding firmly the leadership for a good part of the national open championship reserved for the one-design, Franco Solerio and the team of L’elagain, completed for the occasion in addition to Daniele Cassinari, by Nicholas del Ferro in the role of trimmer and Luigi Viale at the mainsail, became Italian J/70 champion. Vice champion Calvi Network of Carlo Alberini, tied for second on points with third, the Notaro Team of Luca Domenici and Bendetto Giallongo. First among foreigners and sixth overall in the final championship standings was Sweden’s Mikael Lindkvist on Rocad Racing.
NOW EUROPE
‘With a fifth place at the Worlds and the tricolor title we can only be satisfied with our first year on the J/70, now we are looking forward to the continental test to complete the balance of this season,’ said Franco Solerio. In fact, the full Italian fleet is ready to set course for Monte Carlo for the last event of the 2015 season, the European Championship scheduled for October 12-17 under the organizational auspices of the Yacht Club de Monaco.
