Everything is ready in Naples for the first, big challenge between clubs from all over Italy: the “kick-off” of the Italian Sailing Champions League. A new chapter in Italian sailing opens today with the event’s opening ceremony. Teams have already arrived at the Reale Yacht Club Canottieri Savoia and will already be able to practice this morning on the Este24s that will be used as one-design boats for on-water challenges. The Naples event, the first sponsored by the newly formed Italian Sailing League, serving to compile the first national club ranking list (complete with A and B series) and to select the best clubs that will represent us at the International Champions League sailing event in Porto Cervo, Sept. 18-20.
MANY IMPORTANT NAMES
For the “premiere” there are 21 clubs and the names are many and important. Matteo Ivaldi will be at the helm of the Roggero di Lauria Rowing Club along with a trio of top sailors captained by Gabriele Bruni. The Ravenna native is definitely among those to keep an eye on, along with the Trieste-based Yacht Club Adriaco’s Furio Benussi and Andrea Micalli. Alessandro Bonifacio, Mauro Parladori and Barcola and Grignano Sailing Society President Mitja Gialuz will be part of the other Trieste team. For Civitanova, Giacomo Sabbatini will lead a close-knit group, as will Giancarlo Simeoli, a well-rounded sailor with a past on the Este 24 class, for L’Aeronautica Militare. Circolo Canottieri Aniene, captained by Alessandro M. Rinaldi, will hand over the helm to Samuele Nicolettis, who together with the trio of Matteo Aglietti, Matteo Mason and Diego Battisti form another experienced group in this monotype. How to forget the host club’s star player, Maximilian Cappa, another world champion and already broken in on the Este. Circolo della Vela Bari fields Paolo Semeraro, an internationally renowned sailor. The Circolo Nautico e della Vela Argentario will field Edoardo Mancinelli Scotti at the helm, the Yacht Club Italiano, captained by Enrico Isenburg will field Giulio Desiderato at the helm. In the other teams there is certainly no shortage of experienced elements or young people who already boast important results on monotypes.
IN CONTACT WITH PEOPLE
The race course will be positioned right in front of the Lungomare Nazario Sauro in Naples, a natural grandstand from which spectators can enjoy a unique sailing spectacle, with the sparkling DHL gennakers swollen by the breeze, with Vesuvius and Capri in the background.
