Whether you want tosell it on the best possible economic terms (or just redo it new) or buy it used without being “bugged,” you should always have in mind the work needed to restore the boat to its original glory. We put ourselves in the shoes of an owner of a 10-meter boat who has decided to kick off “Operation Rebirth”: contacting refitting professionals and accessory makers, we tried to answer the question closest to our hearts: “Yes, but how much does it cost me?” The prices that came out are indicative (it depends on the type of product, the yard where the refitting takes place, and the cost of labor depending on geographic areas), but they are more than useful to “get an idea” and thus avoid spending an inordinate amount due to simple inexperience.
CURRENT MANEUVERS
The rigging on board (sheets, halyards and ropes) is definitely worth checking in a used boat. You may also decide to “upgrade” it with the latest materials such as Dyneema.
– 350 euros: Dyneema halyard with snap hook (for a 12-meter mast)
– 3,000 euros: rigging for a 10-meter boat (including mooring lines)
ELECTRONICS
To used boat corresponds, in most cases, somewhat dated instrumentation. For example, if you want to switch to wi-fi and control the instruments via tablet or smartphone, you will therefore need to make the appropriate changes.
– 2,000 euros: new central unit with wireless functions
– 4,000 euros: state-of-the-art autopilot
– 1,000: tablet, waterproof tablet case (with bracket) and wi-fi gateway
SPRAYHOOD
Do you have long sailings in mind? Make sure the spray hood is in good condition, otherwise replace it (or change the cloth anyway).
– 2,200 euros: sprayhood new
– 1,300 euros: canopy canvas replacement
ELICA
When you buy a boat, check the propeller: chances are that if it has not undergone any remodeling it still mounts a fixed-blade model, a champion of friction in sailing. Why not opt for a three-bladed folding propeller?
– 1,500: Three-blade folding 16″ (for a 10-meter, a 16″ model is recommended)
REMOTORIZATION
Remotoring a boat is something you will not be able to do on your own, unless you are a specialist. For a 20-horsepower replacement, count at least 1,800 euros in labor.
– from 8,000 euros: inboard engine 20 hp
REPAINTING/POLISHING
Do you want to repaint the boat, maybe even change the color? Know that site prices range from 250 to 400 euros per square meter. For polishing, on the other hand, calculate 50 euros per square meter.
– 6,000 to 9,500 euros: complete hull repainting
– 1,500 euros: polishing/polish
ANTI-OSMOSIS TREATMENT
Anti-osmosis treatment is one of the most important jobs, especially for old hulls: check the actual need for it on site with the help of a hygrometer. We calculated about 300 euros per square meter.
– Approx. 8,000 euros: anti-osmosis hull treatment
SKYLIGHTS AND HATCHES
Don’t underestimate portholes, hatches and the like: above all, keep an eye on the seals and condition of the glass. Replacing a skylight involves about 3 hours of work (and thus about 150 euros of labor).
– from 600 euros: complete replacement of a hatchway
– from 780 euros: complete skylight replacement
– From 400 euros: replacement of gaskets and skylight glass
DECK REPAINTING
Do you want the blanket to return to its former glory? Calculate that the deck repainting job, for a 10-meter, is around 400 euros per square meter (to calculate the area to be repainted: hull length x max. beam x 0.75)
– Approx. 11,000 euros: repainting the bridge (labor included)
– 8,000 euros: anti-skid treatment
ROLLERS/BLENDER
If it is not there, you are advised to put it in. Especially if you plan to use the boat for cruising. Prices, which are indicative, are taken from products at www.nauticplace.com.
– from 880 euros: spooler (Plastimo model 609)
– from 1,800 euros: latest generation blender (Facnor)
FIXED MANOEUVRES.
Sartie, forestay and stern stay: replacing them will prevent you from nasty surprises, especially if the hull in question is years old…
– Approx. 2,000: replacement of fixed rigging (including labor)
BOMPRESSO
Although it is possible to use the gennaker by walling the sail directly on the
bow thruster allows the bowsprit to move the sail center toward the bow and, with the same sail size, reduce the area of inefficiency near the leech.
– from 800 euros: stainless bowsprit installation (labor plus materials)
GENNAKER
The cruiser’s “must” sail. Gennaker means more convenience (you can also roll it on a whisk or lock it in the classic “stocking”) and no tangon.
– from about 1,800 euros: gennaker + stocking
FIOCCO
The average price for Dacron is 70 euros per square meter, which becomes 80
For “entry-level” laminates. For a 10-meter, you will need about 25 square meters of canvas.
– 1,750 euro: dacron cruising genoa
– 2,000 euro: laminated cruising genoa
RIGGING
The only way to truly check the condition of the shaft is to ground it to gain access to all its components and implement changes that are impossible with the help of the bansigo alone.
– From €2,000: tree grounding and rigging
RANDA
We calculated 90 euros per square meter for Dacron and 100 euros for laminate as the average price. Count about 30 square meters for a cruising mainsail.
– 2,700 euro: dacron cruising mainsail
– 3,000 euros: laminated cruising mainsail
WINCH
Dated winches translate into. tremendous fatigue: if you wanted to change them to newer models (also motorized if desired): we calculated replacing six winches (two larger ones for jib sheets, prices at www.nauticplace.com).
– 4,500 euros: 6 winches (4 Lewmar Evo 30 and 2 Evo 40, excluding labor)
