The large bulb torpedo and the taut water lines of Fra Diavolo, the second example of Mylius 18e35 armed by Vincenzo Addessi, dived into the sea for the first time last night around 6 p.m. in the Gulf of Gaeta. After a sabbatical from racing, the Lazio-based owner (who boasts more than one Italian offshore title on his palmares) has made official the team’s return to competition with the largest of his Fra Diavolo.
AN ITALIAN COMEBACK
And it will be an all-Italian comeback, starting with the new boat in fact, born from the pencil of Alberto Simeone-the father of all Mylius-built in Podenzano in evolved composite materials and rigged in the south Pontine harbor. The crew is very Italian, embellished by talents such as Paolo Scutellaro (former Mascalzone Latino), aboard as tactician, Pier Luigi De Felice (Luna Rossa) and Luca Simeone, a veteran of the Star class. Italian, finally, the club he belongs to, the Gaeta E.V.S. Yacht Club, of which Addessi himself is president.
AN AGGRESSIVE LOOK
Voted as much for racing in an increasingly crowded Mini Maxi category as it is for cruising, the new boat sports an aggressive anthracite look and boasts a number of technological firsts. First and foremost is the flexible carbon rigging, which is lightweight, strong, yet easy to pick up in boat decommissioning. The navigation electronics, then, is the B&G 5000, which the company first fitted just on Fra Diavolo after presenting it at METS. Fra Diavolo’s test event will be the Rolex Middle Sea Race, in anticipation of seeing the hull engaged from 2015 in the most important Mediterranean length races.
