That the French catamaran philosophy is catching on in Italy as well is now an established fact. The Ice Cat 61 was born from the meeting between Ice Yachts and engineer Enrico Contreas, the father of the legendary Mattia catamarans and by far one of the most experienced Italian multihull designers. Together, Ice Yachts and Contreas began the design and development of a new generation of catamarans that resulted in the Ice Cat 61, a multihull with streamlined lines that represents a complete redesign in a modern key of the “Skidder,” the Mattia 56 that years ago astonished everyone with its speed and maneuverability.
HULL AND DECK
The lines leave little to current fashion, such as exaggeratedly backward-sloping bows. The yard believes that a boat, which is nonetheless cruising (albeit fast cruising) needs a comfortable area in the bow, for example, so that a mooring line can be retrieved from a buoy without going crazy. The bow still features a scimitar shape as on the Ice 33 race and Ice 52. The deck is high on the water, with lots of volume in the hulls, so the assumption of reducing drag when heave leaves one indifferent, since the Ice Cat 61 is very responsive with hulls designed to minimize heave. The high deck on the water means a dry deck, hence comfortable, an aspect that Ice Yachts engineers kept in mind at every stage of the project. Now, 15 years later, with the ability to build hulls with new technologies, including epoxy resin construction, with hybrid glass-carbon fabrics, has allowed for strong and lightweight hulls and deck.
COPLANAR COCKPIT AND DINETTE
This then translates into more speed and maneuverability, without sacrificing a high-quality interior with modern, optimized design and attention to detail, with fine finishes. The overall length is 18.60 meters with generous volumes both inside and out. The 8-meter width, combined with a 1-meter draft, gives the ability to enter harbors and small roadsteads without problems. The cockpit, at the same level as the dinette floor, offers a very large surface area, fully usable during the day, at night, while sailing and at anchor, in perfect continuity with the interior area.
EASY SAILING
The sail plan, with its massive carbon mast, the boat’s engine, is effective and easy to handle. The mainsail sheet and the movement of its carriage can be slaved to an electric motor , this automation makes mainsail adjustment very easy. The same is provided for the solent, self-bearing. The gennaker is the only sail that must be operated manually, but with extreme convenience, using winches, electric.
SPEED AND ANGLE (EXPECTED)
The upwind angle is expected to be about 30° to the apparent wind-a good angle for a cat, just for hull cleaning and sail plan tunning. Taking advantage of its size and the sail plan’s power-to-weight ratio Ice Cat 61 was born to create significant apparent wind and reach speeds impossible for a cruising monohull. The deck plan provides for the lines to run along the recessed headstay, so maximum cleanliness and ease of moving around the deck. The design speed, under sail will exceed 25 knots since “Sbandato,” the Mattia 56, was doing 23 without any problems, on autopilot. Motor speed is also very high, 13.5 knots, mounting 2 80 HP engines.
YOU WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO FLY
For the uncontactable, Ice Yachts has provided an upgrade, in the Full Carbon version, to mount foils, with which, under certain conditions, to fly on the water. Optional goodies include hybrid propulsion, that is, diesel/electric. We have a new solution, which is patent pending. What is new is that it can also be used if there is a problem with the electronics, which can be switched off. The Ice Cat 61 is the first in a family of catamarans, from 51 to 69 feet, that will join the production of ICE YACHTS monohulls from 33 to 100 feet.
