There is a lot of talk among marine specialists about possible applications thanks to graphene, the revolutionary material derived from graphite. Graphene was discovered in 2004 and earned the Nobel Prize in 2010 for physicists Andrej Gejm and Konstantin Novoselov.
It has an infinitesimal thickness but has the mechanical strength of diamond and the flexibility of plastic. But that’s not all, it is completely transparent, is the best conductor of heat among known materials, and has an electrical conductivity equal to that of copper. One square meter of this material stretched on two sides bears a weight of 4 kg, while weighing less than 1 mg. Its possible applications in the boating industry in the near future are countless: they range from ultra-light batteries that hardly need recharging to almost invisible solar panels; from ultra-light, ultra-strong sails to ultra-powerful, tiny desalinators. We shall see.
