She has been spotted again! The monk seal has returned to the Egadi Islands: a specimen was spotted by a fisherman on a rock at Scalo Maestro, an inlet north of Marettimo, which with Favignana and Levanzo forms the Egadi Islands.

The last photo of this extremely rare animal (specimens living in the Mediterranean, between the coasts of Greece, Croatia, Turkey, Madeira, Morocco and Mauritania, number about 400) in the archipelago was taken in 2012, but this new sighting has led veterinarians and biologists to believe that the seal may have found a new ideal habitat in the Egadi Islands.
THE SECRETS OF “POLYNESIA OF ITALY”
That’s because the islands, nicknamed “the Polynesia of Italy” for their crystal clear waters, are located within in Europe’s largest Marine Protected Area (four miles off the Sicilian coast between Marsala and Trapani) where, for the past few years, hard work has been done to reconcile respect for nature (protecting endangered species, promoting the growth of posidonia – It is no coincidence that in the Egadi Islands last year a record seaweed of over two meters was found) with tourism and sustainable fishing. And, let us not forget, because the monk seal is no longer the object of wild hunting by those who, during the Egadi winters, had no other source of livelihood.
