As we told you a few days ago, there is a revolution in the boating license exam that will take place in the form of quizzes: the news is that in Genoa it will start from June 1. The Ligurian capital will get the ball rolling, but for a nationwide rollout of the new methodology, we will have to wait until September or even early 2015. The theory portion of the boating license exam both within and beyond 12 miles will be in the form of quizzes, like the one for the automobile license, and no longer oral. Genoa will serve as the open house for two simple reasons: the first is that applications for the exam are already reaching such a number that it is necessary to start with the sessions right away; the second reason is that the Genoa Harbor Master’s Office already has the preparation to kick off the new quiz exams thanks to the positive experience gained in the January-March 2012 period when it was the protagonist of the experimentation of the quiz methodology. If you feel like testing yourself, every Friday, we offer a
test
that allows you to assess your preparedness.
NEW THEORY TEST HOW EXAM CHANGES
WITHIN 12 MILES
In the first phase the candidate must demonstrate as a priority to know how to read the geographic coordinates of a point on a nautical chart as well as know the essentials of estimating navigation, the coordinate system according to the Mercator projection, the calculation of range in relation to engine power and remaining fuel quantity. A maximum time of fifteen minutes is allowed for the conduct of the test. The test is passed if the proposed exercise is correctly performed and solved, in which case the candidate enters the next stage. A candidate who fails the test is judged unfit and is excluded from the examination.
BEYOND 12 MILES
The first phase consists of administering three charting exercises. A maximum time of sixty minutes is allowed. The test is passed if all the proposed exercises are performed: if so, the candidate enters the next stage. A candidate who fails the test is excluded from the examination.
The second stage consists of solving in a questionnaire in which the answer deemed correct is indicated by clearly placing an X in the space provided. There will be 33 questions with a maximum of 5 errors in order to pass the exam.
In case the holder already holds a license within 12 miles from the coast (command qualification within 12 miles from the coast), the supplementary theory-only examination consists of the resolution of the Supplementary questionnaire, administered by means of cards, articulated on thirteen questions dealing with the materialnot included in the examination syllabus provided by qualification held; each question has three answer alternatives of which only one is correct. A maximum time of twenty minutes is allowed for the conduct of the test. A maximum number of two errors are allowed for passing: in this case the candidate enters the practical test.
In the case of candidate NON-license holder within 12 miles of coastline (command qualification within 12 miles from the coast), the supplementary theory-only examination consists of solving the basic and supplementary questionnaire, administered through ballots, articulated on the total of thirty-three questions questions covering the subjects included in the scheduled examination program; each question presents three response alternatives of which only one is correct. A maximum time of fifty minutes is allowed for the conduct of the test. A maximum number of three errors in the basic questionnaire and two errors in the supplementary questionnaire are allowed for passing: in this case the candidate enters the practical test. With the fourth error in the basic questionnaire or the third in the supplementary questionnaire, the candidate is ineligible and excluded from the examination
