11400998_859159414119954_6339605999124637668_nThe leg of the ISAF Sailing World Cup in Weymouth & Portland (dedicated to Olympic classes) being run these days has become the scene of a furious controversy: that of the disparity between the rights (or privileges?) of helmsmen and bowmen within ISAF.

THE STONE OF SCANDAL
In particular, the bowwoman of the great Argentine sailor Santiago Lange (a true Olympic glory with 4 editions of the Games on her back and many world championships won), Cecilia Carranza Saroli, has decided to protest the ISAF’s (the International Sailing Federation) decision not to allow her to compete in Weymouth because Lange is injured and unable to compete in the regatta. ISAF regulations do not allow for the replacement of coxswains if necessary, while the bowman can be changed quietly: it is implied, therefore, that the ranking points valid for access to the World Cup circuit relate only to the coxswain without considering who is at the bow.

SILVIA SICOURI ALSO IN THE SQUARE
The case was much “heard” by the bowmen of the Olympic classes, including. Silvia Sicouri, our Sailor of the Year and Nacra 17 ace (along with helmsman Vittorio Bissaro), who decided to have her picture taken with the sign “ISAF, we want equal rights for crews” (ISAF, we want equal rights for bowmen).

DISTINCT BUT INDISPENSABLE ROLES
It reads in the Team Bissaro Sicouri Facebook page: “The roles of helmsman and bowman on board are well defined and distinct, but inseparable from each other; strong crew are those who can find balance in the dynamics at sea and ashore, respect and trust in their partner’s abilities are essential to cross the finish line and have fun doing it“.
