On seeing this beautiful photo taken by a sunbather on the beach in St. Pete, Florida (this is a cloud system that the British, always very didactic, call a cloud wave, literally, “cloud wave”) we wondered: what surprises does the coming summer hold for us? We asked Sergio Brivio, founder of 3B Meteo and consultant to Meteomed, what the projections are for this upcoming summer and, statistics in hand, what is most likely to be expected in different parts of the Mediterranean.
THE EXPERT’S OPINION
“It is becoming increasingly difficult for us meteorologists to provide reliable long-range forecasts, because a real climate revolution is taking place. The summer of 2014 was very wet, especially in the northern Mediterranean with widespread rainfall particularly in June and July. We can say that summer 2015 will definitely be warmer and characterized by general quiet with temperatures slightly above historical averages due to high pressures from the African continent. It will be one of the hottest summers in the 2000s, similar to that of 2012, with classic “breaks” in the northern Mediterranean with the Mistral playing a leading role along with its two or three seasonal gales (especially in the Gulf of Lion and Bocche di Bonifacio areas). However, a more truthful projection of the summer quarter will be available from June.” Let’s see what is meant when we talk about historical averages.
These tables at the bottom provide statistics describing summer weather conditions in various areas of the Mediterranean. Reading them is easy. For each sea area identified (these are those in which the climatic characteristics are homogeneous), we give you four statistical values, each even more specifically related to each of the months under consideration. It is thus possible to have a true historical weather base that can enable you to plan a weekend or vacation throughout the Mediterranean.
