The use of respect rudder is in itself nothing difficult, on the contrary, but there is a procedure to follow in order not to have problems. Fortunately, you are unlikely to find yourself using it, but a breakdown can always happen.
Basically, this is nothing extravagant, but it is important that you follow some cautions. Usually the respect rudder can be T-shaped, L-shaped or a classic old-fashioned tiller. The shape depends a great deal on the cockpit configuration: in fact, on the more modern boats, a configuration has been designed to allow the helmsman to maintain a comfortable position.
On the other hand, if the boat is a few years old, the conditions may not necessarily be the same. If you are used to steering with the wheel, remember that the operation of the tiller rudder (and also the respect rudder) is obviously reversed: by bringing it to the left, the bow will move to starboard and vice versa.
Don’t speed up too much, if you are sailing consider taking a hand, because with tiller steering you have no demultiplier and the effort you will make will be greater than you are used to. To steer more easily you can “add” to the tiller risptto the tangone or half sailor which will allow you to have more play on the rudder and make less effort.
An important tip, tested firsthand: always make sure the junction point where you are going to insert the respect rudder is clean; wash it often to remove salt, which tends to encrust. You will gain valuable minutes.
