A thrilling medal ace, an exceptional show of strength and a gold medal with a very sweet taste: this is how the European Championship of Giulia Conti and Francesca Clapcich, the Italian crew of the double Olympic 49er FX che won the continental title today in the ocean waters of Porto, Portugal, yet another outstanding result of their four-year Olympic career (after last year’s third place in the rainbow and many good World Cup finishes).
A COMEBACK VICTORY
Conti-Clapcich, ever-brightening stars of the National Sailing Team led by Michele Marchesini, took to the water in medium wind conditions (around 10 knots of intensity) to contest the last three trials of the Final series, at the end of which they occupied the fourth position in the standings, just six points behind the top, the Dutch Bekkering-Duetz. Then, in the late afternoon, the top ten in the rankings faced off in the final Medal Race, a dry race with double points, which the two Italians finished in third place, managing to edge out the Dutch, seventh in the Medal and a silver medalist, by only two points. Great Conti-Clapcich, then, able to maintain control over their direct opponents throughout the Medal and close the Championship in the best possible way, proving once again that they are a solid reality of Italian sailing.
THE MEN.
On the men’s side, today the 49er fleet yesterday sailed three more races in the Final series, and after a total of six races, the Gold fleet standings are led by New Zealand’s Burling-Tuke, followed by Australia’s Outteridge-Jensen and Britain’s Pink-Bithell, the first European crew. Italians-Jacopo Plazzi-Umberto Molineris are 13th among Europeans (16th open), Ruggero Tita-Giacomo Cavalli 15th (18th open), Stefano Cherin-Andrea Tesei 17th (21st open) and Uberto Crivelli Visconti-Gianmarco Togni 19th (23rd open). The last three races of the Finals are scheduled today, followed by the Medal Race reserved for the top ten crews in the rankings.
