azureThe future of Italian sailing? It seems more than rosy after the achievements of this fantastic blue summer. Make yourselves comfortable, because there are many of them.

Francis-Marrai
Francesco Marrai

OLYMPIC HOPES
Let’s start with the most resounding, the gold medal among the Laser Standard obtained by Francesco Marrai, a Tuscan born in 1993 and a member of the Fiamme Gialle, at the Acquece Rio International, the most important test event of the season, since it was raced in Guanabara Bay, the site of the 2016 Olympics. It has been a long time since an Italian has stood on the top step of the podium among the Lasers, one of the most difficult classes and from which so many sailing champions have emerged. In the same event, Giulia Conti and Francesca Clapcich took silver among the 49er FX: earlier, by the way, they became European champions in Porto. 2016 is shaping up to be loaded with expectations, from the perspective of Olympic sailing. Marrai, Conti-Clapcich, Vittorio Bissaro and Silvia Sicouri (Nacra 17), Flavia Tartaglini (RS:X Women’s) will take to the water with a common goal: to go to the podium. And who knows, who knows, more surprises may come… Michele Marchesini and Alessandra Sensini are doing a good job.

470, THE NURSERY IS PROMISING
If we rely on “veterans” in the 470 in Rio. Zandonà-Trani (hoping for the best), for the future there is no shortage of young people: Matteo Capurro and Matteo Puppo, a Genoese from the YCI, won the European Youth Championship, while Giacomo Ferrari and Giulio Calabrò (Lega Navale Italia Sez. Lido di Ostia) captured the world youth bronze. Among the females, eyes are on Genovese Benedetta Di Salle and Roberta Dubbini, World Youth gold medalists and special watchers for future Olympians.

THE MANY OTHER “PROMISES”
Then there are many other “promises” that, indeed, we can already consider realities. Giorgia Speciale, European Techno 293 Under 17 gold, Guido Gallinaro, Laser 4.7 world bronze and Under 16 gold, Federica Cattarozzi, 4.7 world silver. Then Gianmarco Planchestainer, world and European Youth Radial silver; Francesca Bergamo, European Radial U17 gold; Matteo Zerbin and Giulio Maccarone, European 420 U17 silver; and Veronica Ferraro and Giulia Ieraldi, European 420 U17 first females. Without forgetting Niccolò Bertola and Jacopo Izzo world Vaurien gold!
