A “CHASE” REGATTA
This time, however, all did not go according to plan: a disqualification for an early start during the last day of the fleet races deprived them of the provisional lead, forcing them to face the Medal Race from third position due to close competition with the Australian and French crews. Thanks to a perfect race, the Fraglia Vela Malcesine and Compagnia della Vela Grosseto sailors managed to finish ahead of their direct opponents, securing the most valuable metal, which follows gold and silver from the Miami and Palma de Mallorca legs.
A VERY TIGHT RACE
Vittorio recounts the medal race, “Our plan this morning was clear: we had to get ahead of the French crew (second in the standings) and have the best race possible. Right away we were in a good position but behind our direct opponent, while the Australian (first in the standings) was in the back. We had our chance when there were only a few meters to the finish line and we didn’t let it slip away by passing the Frenchman by a few lengths at the finish line…it was a very tight race!“.
ON THE RIGHT TRACK
Silvia continues: “We are speechless, yesterday we made the first real mistake of the regatta by taking a black flag, but we were able to keep our focus and stay close to the first two crews. Winning the second gold and third medal in a row in a World Cup event, and doing it in front of ISAF and FIV President Carlo Croce along with Technical Director Michele Marchesini and our coach Ganga Bruni is an indescribable satisfaction. To them and the entire federal team as well as to our sponsors goes our greatest thanks for their work over the past year. These are just the first stages of a journey that is still long and steep, but we now know we are on the right path.”
Team Bissaro-Sicouri’s next event will be Garda Trentino Olympic Week in the waters of Upper Garda from May 7 to 11.
