The Canary Islands this year are the starting point for explorers of the seas: both those who like to do it while not disdaining a bit of competition, and pure cruisers.
ARC and ARC+
The 2014 ARC, the world’s busiest Atlantic Ocean rally (nearly 200 boats starting this year), which reaches the Caribbean island of St. Lucia in the Caribbean after 2,700 miles of sailing, will start on Nov. 23, with arrival scheduled from Dec. 7. Twenty-two nations are represented, with 11 Italian boats at the start. In fact, as early as last Nov. 9, the 51 competitors of the ARC+, which takes participants from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to Mindelo (Cape Verde) after 865 miles of sailing (from there they will depart for St. Lucia on Nov. 19), departed.
ATLANTIC ODYSSEY, THE COUNTER-ARC
Also from the Canary Islands (but from Lanzarote), the second edition of the Atlantic Odyssey, conceived by Jimmy Cornell, founder in 1986 of ARC itself, departs on November 16. Cornell grew tired of the competitive bent the event had taken and decided to organize the Atlantic Odyssey, a “counter-ARC” that enhances the non-competitive spirit by emphasizing fun, safety at sea, and the importance of respecting the environment. The finish is scheduled for Martinique. There are 32 boats at the start, representing 13 nations: there are also three Italian crews.
