Cascais Cup

Azzurra won, with one day to spare (at the Cascais Cup in Portugal), the 52 Super Series, the international circuit of TP52s, the most technical and technologically advanced monohulls. Chronicle of an announced victory, almost a foregone conclusion such was the lead, 35 points, at the start of the Cascais Cup, the last event of the 52 Super Series circuit (still ongoing, last trials today). The strategy stated and implemented as planned was to control the direct opponent, Quantum Racing, and avoid breakages, an eventuality always possible in the challenging conditions of Cascais, as seen yesterday when Azzurra broke a gennaker during the last stern side.

Azzurra’s crew proved that they richly deserved the season victory by achieving excellent results in the Cascais event as well (currently, pending today’s final races, Azzurra is second, 6 points behind Quantum).Azzurra, not paying for the 2015 52 Super Series queen crown, intends to give battle, the will to win continues.

THE SKIPPER
Guillermo Parada, skipper: “Since the beginning of the season we have worked hard to achieve this goal, today we mathematically achieved it and no one can take it away from us. Throughout the season we have sailed better than others and we are proud of this well-deserved victory. Regarding today, we sailed well below our capabilities and we must make sure that it does not happen again. However, a day like this, I believe, proves the great value of yesterday’s one-two, winning is never easy in this fleet. But there are still two races and a six-point gap to close to win the Cascais event. We want to end on a positive note and we certainly will.”

THE TACTICAL.
Vasco Vascotto, tactician: “Job done! I don’t think we could have done more in this 2015, we won both the World and the Super Series in the most prestigious and competitive class. Plus we did it with a day to spare even though we suffered a broken gennaker today and that forced us to 10th place, the worst partial of the season. Having cashed in our most important result, tomorrow we want to focus on closing out the Cascais event in the best possible way as well.”
