The most spectacular Class A world championship of all time recently concluded in New Zealand. The technical evolution of this class has been very rapid and surprising, and has involved many curious champions: America’s Cup sailors, Class A world champions, and Olympians.
Sailors of the caliber of Glenn Ashby, Peter Burling , Blair Tuke, and Nathan Outteridge battled it out on the water between amazing glides and spectacular crashes. The new “revisited” Class A is a trapeze-rigged single, always an example of technical innovation, which now lifts on foils thanks to curved drifts and small risers on the rudders and can easily reach a speed of 20 knots. These multihulls can literally take off by rising completely out of the water.
The races are a lot of fun because it takes very little to have sudden gains in the side of a race, the adrenaline is that transmitted by the AC72s but up to eighty boats race here at the same time. The final victory in the world championship went to Australian Glenn Ashby.
