FABIO POZZOTen years after his passing, Fabio Pozzo reconstructs the portrait of Eric Tabarly, the child who wanted to be an admiral and grew up to be the greatest sailor in sailing history

“Tabarly wrote his own death. More than a year before it happened. “The possibility that one of my crew members might fall overboard is always on my mind,” he said…. Just imagine when, on the night of June 12-13, 1998, he fell overboard from his beloved Pen Duick during a maneuver off the coast of Wales.

They searched for him for a long time, Eric, in those cold Welsh waters. British naval air assets, supplemented by others from the French Navy. Imagine, the transalpine people, when they heard it was Breton. They must have jumped on the chair….

So much so that there was even a risk of a diplomatic incident when the British wanted to stop the search. Paris objected. But, in the end, even the French had to surrender. Olivier De Kersauson, who continued to refuse to believe that Eric was really dead, also… I am reminded of his words, when speaking of old age he said that he did not want to think about it, that he still had a round-the-world tour to do. And turning toward the sea, he sighed, “Yes, I wish I was there in the middle of it now.” That God whom he, though Catholic, did not understand, probably listened to him.

“I never call on him for rescue when I am in trouble. If he is the one who got me into trouble, why should he then come to fish me out?”

He didn’t.”
