We continue our journey to discover Young Timers, or boats that are more than 10 years old, between 15 and 30, competitively priced on the used market, and are still in good condition. Models destined to become cult for some reason: design, original solutions, or the number of hulls produced. Here are three more models in this series.
BAVARIA 38 MATCH
The Bavaria 38 Match represents a cult boat because it is the German shipyard’s only real attempt to produce a sport boat with significant sales numbers. The sales goal was only partially achieved, but the 38 Match, designed by guru Doug Peterson, was a really fast boat. Especially in the airs, where its hull with little wetted surface area and sail plan with a fairly overlapping headsail ensure good performance in the airs. And inside it was not uncomfortable for cruising, in fact discreetly finished. Not easy to find used, it has a listing around 60,000 euros.
X-362 SPORT
More than a boat, the X-362, signed by Niels Jeppesen, especially in the more “naughty” Sport version, is a piece of history of boats born at the turn of the 1990s and 2000s. It remained in production 6 years and 156 examples were built. Equipped with a cruising interior, however, the boat was a real breeze hunter and buoy gobbler in racing. Countless national and international regattas won by the 362 Sport around the world, probably one of the Danish shipyard’s most successful boats. This makes those who have it still hold on to it, hard to find it under 70,000 euros.
OCEANIS 430
The 430 is a slightly older than 30-year-old design, beginning production in the late 1980s, but it represents another cult piece in the history of recent cruising boats. In fact, it is Beneteau’s first model in the Oceanis series, and it was entrusted to archistar Philippe Briand. Equipped with an America’s Cup-style wing keel, the 430 is a comfortable, refined and advanced cruising boat. One of the distinguishing notes is the very special shape of the deckhouse and its fenestration. The deckhouse is not high and is aesthetically well integrated with the deck. Used it still holds its price well and does not sell for less than 65,000 euros, but it can be worth it if well maintained and give a lot of satisfaction even in challenging sailing.

Double rudder wheel: when racing serves cruising
double rudder wheel is now almost a must-have for the majority of boats on the market but, in reality, it is a requirement that originated well back in time, for racing. Like so many arrangements developed for competition, however, it
