Used boats, the history of Nautor’s iconic Swan 40

The Swan 40 Frers design is a boat with a special history, marking a historic period for the Nautor shipyard.

In 1970, the first version of the Swan 40 was the third model to come out of the Finnish shipyard, following the Swan 36 progenitor followed by the Swan 43, both from 1967, and coinciding with the Swan 37, also from 1970. It was designed by Sparkman & Stephens of News York, then the world’s most famous firm in sailboat design. Of the first version of the Swan 40, 51 examples were produced from 1970 to 1972. Then the 40-footer was no longer produced.

There is a need for a new 40-foot Swan

But in the early 1990s Nautor guru Pekka Koskenkyla realized that the time had come again to return to producing a “small” Swan in the 40-foot size.

So he commissioned the Argentine studio of German Frers, who had become the exclusive designer of the Finnish shipyard for a number of years (and still is!), for a newly designed 40-footer.

Frers set to work and produced a small masterpiece. The first example of the second version of the Swan 40 touched the water in 1992 and remained in production for a full nine years, until 2001, produced in 58 examples.

Secrets of Frers’ Swan 40

Its longevity is thanks to a very elegant line with low freeboard, a very balanced retractable deckhouse, pronounced slips and an exceptional maximum width of an impressive 3.93 m for a boat 12.27 m long overall. And then Frers’ classy touch, a steeply negatively pitched stern with his signature rounded bevel at the hull/ deck connection, which gives a touch of class and instant recognition.

With the maximum width at the hull centerline, the saloon is the strength of the Swan 40 Frers, with two opposing sofas and the upper berth on the port side. Great boat!
