Matteo Iachino

Matteo Iachino, the Italian athlete from Savona, born in 1989, crossed the entire Ligurian Sea from Imperia to the Giraglia Rock in Corsica last Sept. 7 on his windsurf equipped with foils. An unprecedented undertaking with an environmental purpose as well.

Epic crossing for windsurfer Matteo Iachino. An extraordinary endless glide from Liguria to Corsica. The boom of his windsurf tightly in his hands. His feet tucked into the straps to steer his board launched like a missile. In the eyes the horizon of a frightening open sea. Until that dot that gets closer and closer and eventually dissolves all the tension into a wide smile. Matteo Iachino is overjoyed. He did it.

He managed to cross the Ligurian Sea aboard a windsurf with foil. It was an unprecedented crossing that saw the slalom world champion set off from Imperia last Sept. 7 at 8:30 a.m. to reach the Giraglia Islet in Corsica. A course of about 80 miles, crazy to tackle on a windsurfer in one leg, which Matthew made his own with a time of 6 hours and 3 minutes.

Iachino Crossing

A dream cultivated by Italian windsurfers since the 1990s

Epic crossing for windsurfer Matteo Iachino. Indeed, it was since the 1990s that some of Italy’s strongest windsurfers had been mulling over the possibilities of carrying out this “long distance” test by taking advantage of good days of Tramontana, Levante and Libeccio winds. Athletes such as Luca De Pedrini and Paolo Ghione. The unknowns, however, were many. Today, however, more than 20 years later, Matteo has made that wish a reality: “The wind conditions below the coast did not help us both at the start and at the finish line,” said the athlete of the Italian Yacht Club – but in the open sea I was able to follow a steady gait with a few stretches of strong gusts and waves up to a meter. Especially on the finale, the drop in wind made the Giraglia rock seem like a mirage, close but unreachable. Then I finally touched it! It was hard but I am really happy to have achieved my dream.”

The real enterprise is the preservation of the sea

Sponsored by the City of Imperia, Iachino’s venture also aims to send a strong message for environmental and marine advocacy. In fact, the Ligurian Sea crossing is the pivotal event of the “One Sea for All” project, which involves the organization on Ligurian beaches of various events dedicated to sustainability, respect for the marine environment, promotion of water sports and social inclusion.

The event and meetings are produced with the support of Tirreno Power and in collaboration with the Il Porto dei Piccoli Association, for which Matteo is an “ambassador,” are open to local school children and involve children undergoing treatment at major hospitals in the region. Bravo Matthew, to realize your dreams and spread ours!
