A new custom superyacht is coming out of the German shipyard YYachts, located in Greifswald, theY9 will in fact make its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival, Sept. 6-11. This 27-foot-40 maxiyacht is a design by Bill Tripp, while the interior was developed by Norm Architects in collaboration with Design Unlimited and YYachts’ in-house design team. ‘
Y9 – the boat concept
The shipyard’s new flagship, the Y9, was born out of a desire to make a handcrafted product despite its length, while following the company’s philosophy of reducing sailing to the essentials, simplifying the boat by accommodating the owner’s various needs.
This 27.40 m maxi yacht features the same volume as a 100-foot yacht with a private master cabin that is a mini-apartment, and comfortable guest cabins as well as a very comfortable crew area. The Y9 is built entirely of carbon fiber, to limit the final displacement of what is still a cruising and long-distance boat, although it has a sporty soul.
Y9 – Michael Schmidt‘s Opinion
YYachts founder Michael Schmidt recounted, “At 90 feet in length, the yacht also has a good rating and with its sail plan may be able to win some regattas such as the St Barths Bucket, the Superyacht Cup or the Maxi Rolex Cup” . The owner also wanted to have a yacht that was noise-free at anchor in the roadstead. YYachts then used solar panels on the deckhouse so that there is no need to use the generator at night.
Y9 – The Interior
The interior of the Y9 was jointly developed by two design studios. Norm Architects of Copenhagen and Design Unlimited of Lymington, who combined their expertise to create an elegant “Scandinavian” look for the Y9 that follows the principle of “soft minimalism.” The owner chose smoked oak, which perfectly conveys the feeling of Copenhagen design.

YYachts – The Shipyard
With his Y Yachts, Michael Schmidt wants to produce boats that are large and luxurious, but free of all the superficialities and complications that often involve this segment. Former founder of the Hanse shipyard, which he sold in 2011, with this new venture that began with the first boat produced in 2015 he is aiming for a very specific clientele.
